Design a referral-reward feature for a SaaS app.
Users sign up with an email and belong to an Account. Accounts are grouped by email domain and have a plan: FREE, PRO_MONTHLY, or PRO_YEARLY.
Today, register(email, userDetails) creates a user and creates a new account if the email domain does not already exist. upgrade(accountId, plan) upgrades an account.
New requirement: every user has a referral link, for example /signup?ref=alice_code. If Bob signs up using Alice’s link and Bob’s email domain creates a new account, that account is considered referred by Alice. If that account later upgrades to a paid plan, Alice should receive a reward.
If Bob joins an existing account, no referral reward applies. Alice can receive only one reward per referred account.
Design the API, DB schema, registration/upgrade flows, async processing, idempotency, race-condition handling, payout tracking, monitoring, and failure recovery.
